Nom is an textile artist born in eswatini, working and living in Alkmaar in the Netherlands.

About my work

I’m inspired by geometric patterns and bold colors—one for structure and a sense of direction, the other purely driven by intuition. In my work, colors may clash, be bold, unapologetic, and full of life. Yet, the ever-present black and white creates balance and harmony, making every color stand out even more.

I use reclaimed wood and rope (mostly hand-dyed) for my sculptures, where the (im)perfections of the wood and the color nuances of the rope come together in new compositions. It’s my way of celebrating a sense of worth and connection.”

about me

My name is nom, short for Nompumelelo. a name of Zulu origin and means “mother of success, mother of freedom”

Growing up in a big family where money was tight, I quickly learned that if I wanted to have something, I had to be resourceful and make it myself. So using my imagination and any useful materials I could get my hands on, I made my very own Barbie Dreamhouse.

As a young girl, I was passionate about all things fashion and had my heart set on a career in the industry. I graduated from Charles Montaigne Fashion Academy in Amsterdam and pursued a career as a fashion designer.

However, after 12 years in fashion, I missed the unbridled creativity of my youth, the joy of actually creating things with my own two hands. It was time to step away from my desk, time to experiment with different techniques and materials. Time to start a new creative journey.
